During my time as a graduate student at Louisiana State University, I traded out old basketball nets for new nets throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. I consider each net to be a recording, a valuable document of the place where it was collected. The nets are witnesses to the events that took place on the court where they hung. Participating in a trade to make an image, rather than the traditional idea of taking a photograph made me rethink the relationship between photographer and subject and how it can evolve into an interaction that uses lesses aggressive vocabulary.
After I collected over one hundred basketball nets from all over East Baton Rouge Parish, I stitched them together to make an abstract map of the area. Because I believe each net is a document of the place where it hung, the nets as a whole represent the entire area, creating a tactile map that tells the story of place in a non-traditional way.
