I began writing letters to Adam Silver, the commissioner of the National Basketball Association, in response to his decision to discourage athletes playing in the NBA from kneeling during the National Anthem. As I continued the correspondence, the letters became both intimate and calculated as I attempted to share my experience of understanding our political moment through basketball.
